49. Drawing on Childhood Holiday Memories to Create Memorable Holiday Experiences Now, with Peter Easdown

Looking back at what made our childhood holiday memories so special can be a helpful tool for us in the industry in creating memorable experiences for our guests now.

Welcome to That Bad Review. Each week accommodation industry leader Adrian Easdown talks to passionate people from across the industry who share their thoughts, experiences and lessons learned from the good, the bad and the ugly in accommodation and hospitality.

If you’re an owner or operator of any type of accommodation or hospitality business, you’ll find That Bad Review full of ideas to help you operate more effectively and profitably, and keep those five-star reviews coming.

This episode is a bit of a departure from recent shows. In this one, I interview my father, Peter Easdown. In some ways, this trip down memory lane might seem a little self-indulgent. However, looking back at our childhood holiday experiences, in particular, I can really shine a light on the essence of what makes a truly memorable holiday experience.

Think about it like this: what can we pull out of those wonderful childhood holiday experiences that we can apply now and recreate those experiences for our guests?

Here are some of the stops on this trip down memory lane:

  • Life growing up on Kaolin Clay mine (it’s all true)
  • A bit of context around Adrian’s childhood experiences and how it shaped him
  • How important and formative childhood memories are
  • What makes memories of camping, fishing and stuff so strong
  • Fond memories of Bermagui
  • What can we learn about luring guests back again and again
  • Holidays in a little yellow Jayco (six kids, four weeks, how?)
  • Tall tales of sharks, marlin and the one that (inevitably) got away
