Top Tips on How to Attract and Retain Great Staff

One of the most important facets of any business is having good staff. They’re the beating heart of your organisation. They can be the difference between delivering great service and maximising on your already fantastic assets, and not producing the value that your business is capable of.

So, how do you go about attracting brilliant staff in the first place, and how do you keep them around once you’ve found them? Let’s have a look at a few tips that will help you to build an effective team that runs smoothly and creates great results that you can be proud of.

Identify Your Employees’ Challenges

One of the key skills in management is empathy – and not just for your clients but for your staff too. It’s important to know what their struggles are, and if there’s anything you can do to help.

For many of my prospective employees, accommodation is a big issue, particularly out here in a small coastal town. So, when I’m looking at hiring great staff, I address this problem and go the extra mile to try and find them a place to live when they come and work for me.

In a more general sense, this is about making the transition into your employment as easy as possible, and showing your employees that you understand their difficulties and are willing to put in the effort to address those issues.

Reward Accordingly

Everyone likes to feel appreciated for the hard work they put in, not least of all your staff. It’s important as a business owner to make sure that your best employees who continue to deliver on a regular basis are rewarded for their efforts. If this is a few extra bucks in their pay packet, then I would definitely recommend doing so. It’ll save you money in the long-run from not having to continuously train new staff, and if you don’t reward accordingly, your star employees may be tempted to go work elsewhere.

Empower Your Staff

While financial remuneration is important for attracting and retaining great staff, it’s not the only thing you need in order to gain a reputation as a brilliant employer.  Your employees will also want to feel valued in the work that they do. Let them work together as a team, and make sure that they realise how important their role is in the business as a whole. This means sharing developments with them, letting them in on decision-making processes, celebrating company victories together and mourning losses as a collective team.

Celebrate!

Nothing solidifies a team better than a party! Try and organise events from time to time where everyone can get together, let their hair down and socialise outside of a work setting. We try and set up several events like these per year with food, drink and entertainment, and the result is a stronger, close-knit team.

At the end of the day, a close team of invested in employees is about the greatest commodity you can have in business. And it won’t happen by accident. There’s no guaranteed way to attract great staff and retain them. Sometimes employees simply aren’t a good fit for your business, and inevitably top employees move on every now and then. However, if you follow the above steps then you go a significant way towards making sure you’ve got a team of people who can turn your business from good to great.
